1970 – 1971

South African Commandos Group Commander / Commander-in-Chief rank badge is a rank that was introduced in 1970, and, although the rank design was passed by Heraldry in 1970, by the time the Commander-in-Chief rank was changed to Colonel, in 1971, the process for producing the rank insignia was already well advanced. A few examples of this insignia exist, as a reminder of one of many attempts to give the SA Defence Force its own character.
