The Essential Services Protection Corps (ESPC) was a World War 2 era auxiliary unit of the Union Defence Force (UDF), formed in South Africa in October 1939. Composed mainly of ex-servicemen aged 45 and older, its primary mission was to guard essential internal infrastructure like roads, bridges, and power stations against sabotage.

Establishment: The ESPC was established on October 29, 1939, under the command of Brigadier C.H. Blaine.

Function: Volunteers were tasked with securing “key points” throughout the country, including railways, ports, airports, waterworks, and power stations.
