The Great Betrayal, by Ian Smith, 1997, 1st edition, 418 pages, 22 photos, index. Charts the rise and fall of Rhodesia [now Zimbabwe], a once-great nation. This book tells the story behind the signing of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, as well as the excesses of power that Mugabe has used to create the virtual dictatorship which exists in Zimbabwe. The story begins in a small African town where Ian Smith was brought up with a strong tradition of service. He fought for the RAF in the 2nd world war, he was shot down over Italy and escaped by hiking over the freezing Alps in his socks. In 1948 shortly after the war ended, he entered politics. He brings his story to the present day [1997] where he still rides his bicycle with top hat through the streets of Harare – much to the annoyance of Mugabe.
