9012 : 2nd Bn Rhodesia Regiment helmet badge, WW1

1914 – 1917

2nd Battalion Rhodesia Regiment helmet badge, WW1, sheet brass cut out, scarce (2 RR)

The 2nd Rhodesia Regiment (2 RR) was raised on the 16th November 1914 and it was composed of five companies initially under the command of Major Rowan Cashel (BSAP) but later under Lieut ColoneI A.E.Capell DSO. On the 8th March 1915 the regiment, some 800 strong, left Salisbury for East Africa where it became rapidly involved in heavy fighting as part of the 1st East African Brigade. After two years of hard fought and costly battles the regiment returned to Southern Rhodesia on the 14th April 1917. Depleted by heavy casualties the Regiment was no longer considered an effective fighting force and despIte havIng earned itself a reputatIon for bravery, the 2nd Rhodesia Regiment was disbanded on the 12th October 1917.
