1 SWA Infantry Bn was established in 1939 as an Infantry Unit and formed part of the Union of South Africa Citizen Force. 1 SWA Battalion was mobilised in 1940 and served in South West Africa, South Africa and in the Western Desert until finally disbanded in 1943 at the end of the North African Campaign.

1 SWA Infantry Battalion was re-established in 1957 as a Support Unit for the Union of South Africa Citizen Force and in 1960, the Regiment was based in Windhoek and converted into an Armoured Car Regiment and renamed Regiment Windhoek.
